Yes, Connie, we'll take whatever Yiddish that you can sing!



Where do they speak better Yiddish? In Vienna or in Siena? In Minsk, Pinsk, Lublin or Dublin? And who is there in America to bring beautiful harmony out of all this discord? Connie Francis, of course, an Italian girl from Bloomfield, New Jersey. Just as there's a song on this record for everyone, Connie's impeccable Jewish accent satisfies and amazes everyone.

How does Connie, who has had such famous LP successes on MGM Records with Italian Favorites (E/SE 3791) and Spanish Favorites (E/SE 3853) come to sing Yiddish so well? Very early in her career Connie trouped Grossinger's the Concord, Brown's and other hotels in the famous Catskill Mountains Borscht Belt, long known as incubator of stars. As a featured singer in a show called Startime, Connie heard enough Yiddish, both from fellow troupers and from audiences, to develop a pretty fair nonpartisan accent of her own.

Whatever the accent, the dozen songs in this album are all distinctively Jewish. And like the people who know, love and sing them, they come from everywhere. Some are folk songs, brought to this country from Europe a hundred or more years ago. Some were written during the Golden Age of the Yiddish Theater on New York's Second Avenue, thirty or forty years ago. One, The Anniversary Song, was first sung in English by Al Jolson, in "The Jolson Story," his well-remembered motion picture biography, and was only later translated into Yiddish.

All of which makes you wonder, especially since we've ben talking about accents. People all over America wait for Connie's MGM Records and love to sing her songs when they hear them. Now, this is fine as far as Tzena, Tzena goes: it isn't at all difficult to pronounce, and anyone should be able to manage it. But can you imagine Shein Vi De Levone sung in an Oklahoma drawl of a New England twang? It's liable to start a whole new craze in languages!
